The more profit your business makes, the better it is for you now and the more it will be worth someday when you decide to transition it to someone else. Of course, if it were that easy, everyone would be doing it.
Here are some strategies that even the smallest business can consider:

1. Optimize Operations: Increase your profits without selling a single additional customer or product. Tightening your processes reduces time, rework, and costs, especially the hidden cost of retraining new staff.
2. Delight Your Customers: Very few businesses have no competitors. Why do your customers come to you instead of them? Don’t assume; ask. Then lean in on whatever that advantage is.
3. Innovate Continuously: Even a pillar of the community needs to keep up with the times. Your customers and competitors are always shifting. Keep your eyes and ears open and encourage your team to speak up when they see something. If they do, so do their neighbors. Your customers.
4. Leverage Data: You don’t need fancy “data analytics”. Just look at what your numbers are telling you. Too many owners think their gut will tell them what the market is doing, or how the business is running, and run into problems when they miss the signals their actual numbers have been trying to ell them for months.
5. Expand Your Network: Small business owners know who the competitors are. Unless there really is “no room in this town for both of us”, there will be many opportunities to leverage relationships within your industry. Even if you can’t actively collaborate, you still have common issues, such as your suppliers.
