Every owner has four strategic choice to make. Not every day, but often enough to guide the general direction of the business for a while.

Then there is Option 5: do little to improve the business, and don’t put money into savings or IRAs because they plan to sell the business Someday to fund their retirement. That path is heavily traveled: horrifyingly, 87% of owners discover that Someday comes for them much sooner than they thought, and they have neither savings nor any selling value for the business.

Of course, you’re not going to do that. Well, that puts you in the top 13 percent already!

At least once a year, a business owner should make one of 4 strategic choices. Any of them is OK as long as you are willing to accept the inherent consequences and take the actions needed to make your strategy work.

Just don’t pick door #5, because there is nothing good behind it.
